Tiago Melo Alves comments on his expectations for the legal market in 2026

The latest edition of “Quem é Quem na Advocacia de Negócios em Portugal” (Who's Who in Business Law in Portugal), published by Jornal Económico, invited national law firms to comment on “What do you expect from the legal market in 2026?”

Tiago Melo Alves, founding partner of Melo Alves and Managing Partner, states that:

" The market will consolidate the profound changes already underway, requiring strategic responses from independent law firms. The entry of multidisciplinary consultancies has reshaped the competitive landscape in Portugal. We are also seeing the emergence of new independent structures, resulting in more specialized and results-oriented legal services.

Commercial litigation will remain in high demand, as will labor law, immigration and nationality issues, and real estate. Legal support for Portuguese investors in Africa and Asia will continue to expand, reflecting the international vocation of Portuguese companies. Commercial and corporate law, M&A transactions, economic criminal law, and corporate compliance reflect clients' concerns in a highly demanding regulatory environment. The areas of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance), renewable energy, and strategic infrastructure are becoming increasingly relevant.

The integration of artificial intelligence into legal research, document analysis, and procedural management is no longer an option but a condition for competitiveness. Cybersecurity and data protection are emerging as high-value areas of expertise.

Our commitment for 2026 is based on a strategy of efficiency and cultural proximity to the markets where we operate. We favor carefully selected local partnerships—law firms, consultants, and agents with in-depth knowledge of the legal, economic, and cultural contexts. This is our competitive advantage in the Angolan and Asian markets, where the Portuguese language and experience in Portuguese-speaking jurisdictions position us as natural strategic partners for international investors.

We look to 2026 with the added responsibility of those who have witnessed the profound transformations of the Portuguese judicial system and with the conviction that independent law has a decisive role in promoting justice and defending the constitutional guarantees of citizens."
