OPINION | Anonymous complaints: the mire of the investigation

With the exception of genuine whistleblowers, the majority of informants/whistleblowers collaborate with well-defined intentions.

The phrase that a judge uttered in a media criminal case has become famous: ‘The use of whistleblowers has turned the investigation into a veritable mire’.

On the back of a so-called anonymous tip-off, criminal proceedings are launched against a citizen when, in fact, there is no whistleblower. It is still common for intrusive measures to be taken against citizens on the basis of anonymous complaints.
