Partner Carlos Melo Alves appeared on Sic Notícias' Edição da Noite programme to comment on the recent statement by the Public Prosecutor's Office, which admitted that it had failed to detect seven telephone wiretaps involving the former Prime Minister. According to Carlos Melo Alves, there were procedural irregularities: the wiretaps should have been validated by the President of the Supreme Court of Justice, which did not happen within the legal deadlines. The result? The wiretaps were declared null and void, which, in this case, appear to have no probative value.
Despite the flaws, Carlos Melo Alves considers that there is no significant legal gravity, emphasising that similar situations often occur in Portuguese courts. The case will only be closed when the Public Prosecutor's Office issues its final ruling on all the defendants.
When public figures are involved, he argues that the Attorney General should publicly clarify whether or not there is relevant evidence.
